News and Articles on Party Of The First Part

    Bloom Where You're Planted  Sep 4, 2008
Unlike Jamie Lynn Spears and the 25% of the girls who drop in at the shelter where I volunteer, Mr. and Mrs. Palin have sought out and put a heavy hand on the shoulder of the OTHER party to the tango and there he sat, scaring the living hades out of the mothers of sons who have been taught that babies are solely the *fault* of the Party of the First Part and her poor toddler son, the Party of the Second Part, simply cannot be expected to *ruin his life* by marrying the mother of HIS CHILD.. If... (Townhall.com)

MARTY RUSSELL:I'll not be party to that party, but I'll party  Aug 27, 2008
But party can also refer to an individual as in the party of the first part or the party of the second part. Problem is, the older you get the less your parts get to party. (Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal)

LETTERS: The oil crisis  Jul 6, 2008
The government of Iraq will be the principal "party of the first part" in these contracts, relieving the occupying forces of any responsibility for the enforcement of its terms. This is an opportunity for the Bush administration to score a coup that will frustrate the naysayers. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- Opinion)

The whole truth and nothing but...  Apr 10, 2008
"After. After I'd split up from Sally. Although Sally and I were, I say that we, we certainly were not getting along for a fair period of that time. But I didn't start seeing Kate Neilson six weeks after, it was a little bit longer after, after that." All of which was presumably his private verbal homage to Groucho Marx's famous "the party of the first part" speech and should therefore be applauded for its studied levity. Imagine how much more immensely satisfying the entire Denton experience... (Sydney Morning Herald)

    Mother-daughter team write a save-some-money diet  Nov 28, 2007
The Party of the First Part: The Curious World of Legalese by Adam Freedman ($23, Henry Holt). This isn't a financial book per se but rather a text on the oft-bizarre and sometimes humorous meanings of legal terms. (AZCentral -- Business)

    City's water woes have a history  Oct 19, 2007
The Hatfield flood that followed may have proved the only contract dispute ever resulting from over-performance by the party of the first part. Sharp-eyed municipal lawyers sensed that to pay the rainmaker, contract or no contract, could subject the city to endless lawsuits. (San Diego Union-Tribune -- Opinion)

Language: And name that pet  Aug 19, 2007
"The Party of the First Part" (Henry Holt, $23), by Adam Freedman, a lighthearted but lucid explanation of legalese. Dealing with statute books "crammed full of titles that are astonishingly obscure," he notes that the Non-Intercourse Act - in U.S. federal law since 1790 - "has, one would think, failed rather spectacularly in its stated purpose." (To the founders, intercourse meant "commerce," and that law requires that the federal government approve sales of Indian tribal lands. (International Herald Tribune -- Ed/Op)

    M. SCOTT MORRIS: Dog's in the details when Doberman draws up contract  Aug 18, 2007
"The party of the first part, to be known as Human, will come home from work every day at lunchtime to let the party of the second part, to be known as Dog, go outside to take care of personal business, including, but not limited to, tinkling.". I'm skipping a few sections, but it further states: "Failure on the Human's part will result in wet patches on floors, furniture and beds.". (Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal)

Ventre: Vick, others making sports fans legal experts  Aug 16, 2007
You, the party of the first part, shall be considered an authority on many of the cases that arise because, while you dont have a law degree, you listen to and absorb the opinions of many who do. These days, you cant avoid it. (MSNBC -- Sports)

Losers of the Week, July 27  Jul 28, 2007
Heretofore, any pratfalls, stumbles, lurches, trips, slips, unrehearsed splits, staggers or unscheduled hopping by the party of the first part shall become the sole intellectual property of Sony BMG, which retains all rights and we retain our options on any other subsequent face-first dives. . Don't put too much stock in Bonds' tactful concern  Jul 11, 2007
Whatever influence third parties may have had on public perceptions, then, primary responsibility rests with the party of the first part. Bonds can be charming and clever and insightful, as he was at intervals yesterday, but his image is the product of a long-standing prickly personality that is probably beyond repair. (San Diego Union-Tribune -- Sports)

Cloud, minus a silver lining  Mar 12, 2007
But the months pass and instead he's testifying to the grand jury about his definition of nonsexual relations -- if the party of the first part is apart from the parts of the party of the second part while the party of the second part is partaking of the parts of the party of the first part, etc. Once you argue on that basis, the very process is a mockery. (Washington Times, DC)

Retire notion players are not accountable (Dan Daly)  Feb 20, 2007
After all, when you sign an NFL contract, what you're basically saying is, "The party of the first part agrees to sell his body to the party of the second part for [insert amount here]." That's the basic transaction -- money for blood, money for broken bones, money for collisions that make people gasp. The rest of Huff's quote in Time says it all: "We try to hurt everybody. We hit each other as hard as we can." Of course, when you try to hurt everybody, when you try to hit each other as hard as... (Washington Times, DC)

Blount's Week Roy Blount Jr. Not Listening? The humorist, in the first of a series of weekly commentaries for time.com, wonders whether Bush was listening to the Iraq Study Group report, or just went "hunh?"  Dec 9, 2006
I (the party of the first part, let us say, only for the sake of convenience, not priority) may sometimes speak in what we might call a perceived mumble, and the Mrs. has maybe a spot or two of OLMOY-related (Over-Loud Music of Yore) hearing loss; and vice-versa; and at least one of us who, arguably, could on occasion be me, though not necessarily usually, from my point of view tends to address the other in a normal (not to say murmuring) tone of voice from a room or two away. So we seldom hear... (Time.com)
