    Oregon looks into spill at Smith's plant  Aug 20, 2008
    On Aug. 8, the DEQ issued a notice saying that the discharge from the Weston plant in Umatilla County violated Oregon environmental law. The nitrogen content of food-processing wastewater can drive down stream oxygen levels and harm fish, said Mitch Wolgamott, interim eastern region administrator for DEQ.     Large bodies of water - San Francisco Bay, Chesapeake Bay and Lake Huron, among others - are vulnerable to airborne mercury from 150 cement kilns across the country, said a report issued by Earthjustice and the Environmental Integrity Project, two groups specializing in environmental law.     The environmentalists said the company was not protecting or re-establishing the endangered Karner Blue butterfly on the land, as was required by the agreement with the DEC. In the most recent court ruling, the Appellate Court said Save the Pine Bush did not establish specific environmental injury that confers standing under state environmental law. According to the decision, having members of the group go to the site or next to it to observe the butterfly was not enough to confer standing. (Community News Weekly, NY)

    Last year, the law school was ranked in the top 20 for environmental law and diversity, but "barely missed" making those lists this year, according to spokeswoman Cynthia Quinn. The UH-Manoa College of Education ranked 65th out of 278 schools surveyed, the university said in another news release. (Honolulu Star-Bulletin)
