The Navy prefers to place the 500-square-nautical-mile range off Jacksonville's coast because of the water depth and orientation to shore, relatively good weather, visibility and light shipping traffic, a recent Navy environmental impact report says. In addition, the range would be close to Mayport Naval Station, which has six antisubmarine helicopter squadrons, and to Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base and its ballistic and guided-missile submarines.
