    Budget '08: Steeling up the railways  Feb 27, 2008
    The estimate for working expenses has been kept 20% higheron account of higher provision for depreciation reserve fund, pension fund and a Rs 5000 crore provision for anticipated recommendations of the sixth pay commission. Even the cash surplus next year is estimated to be at Rs 24, 873 crore, below the Rs 25,000 crore achieved this year. (India Times)

    Starting with the revised estimates for 2005-06, the Railways' accounting system made some changes that removed the allocations for the Depreciation Reserve Fund (DRF) from its classification of working expenses. This had the effect of inflating the "cash surplus" projected in the Railway Budget. (Frontline)

    An allocation of Rs 5,500 crore has been made for the depreciation reserve fund for 2007-08. Of the Rs 17,000-crore SRSF, most renewals of tracks, bridges, track circuiting and rolling stock will be completed by March 07 and remaining works will be completed by March 08. (India Times)
